why is it so important?\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"description\" class=\"row block-sm\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-10 col-lg-10 col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-12 mx-auto\">\n<p>Visiting all of the different institutions will give you a better understanding of the role the French language plays in the historic Red River Colony &#8211; especially in visiting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/en\/articles\/passion-histoire-blog-a-day-in-the-life-of-a-voyageur-at-fort-gibraltar\">Fort Gibraltar<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/en\/articles\/passion-histoire-blog-a-visit-to-the-saint-boniface-museum\">Saint-Boniface Museum<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; but it\u2019s by watching the\u00a0<i>At the Heart of Manitoba\u2019s Francophone Community\u00a0<\/i>documentary that you will find the final piece of the puzzle, assembling all of the elements.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary starts with the discovery of what was not yet called Manitoba by Pierre de la V\u00e9rendrye in 1738, the first voyageurs, the fur trade, and the M\u00e9tis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/cerJfblM_rkoHdgVVsSMerrLQi1-iH1Ow3EKD1gpcMC6FMTwyVsInC_WhXGbYjtSe01jocET4u9QjD7TJd_LmotI_0mlZ0mTnhYa7qvbNQZPi4-ObQ0YtFgAet-QIR9jWGyWa9F3\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The list of names and events goes on, but this is not a lesson in history, it\u2019s a lesson in resistance.<\/p>\n<p>We are told decade after decade and law after law about the situation of the French language in Manitoba.\u00a0 At times accepted, rejected, tolerated, prohibited, or valued, being able to speak French and teach French in schools is a legal battle that spans over many years.\u00a0 Today, thanks to this resistance, we have three levels of service in French superimposed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and federally, the Franco-Manitoban School Division (DSFM), French media, and immigration that perpetuates the French language.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/MR_5XRwmzPwNg7lmgXFZmsjkbk-8rdQgDmV80mCCs1npKXRzZ0YzO7LW0q8vOmqRcaxICZCiKOn3uHaznM2AKc80KuKKC0l8obS3rW6dJGTfs9PP-l0BxH7bCIQ7B3Kr_tK4hmCs\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Langevin, Riel, Forest, Provencher, La Libert\u00e9, all these names are more or less synonymous with the documentary which (re)explains who these historical figures are.\u00a0 The institutions aren\u2019t left out either, from the SFM to the 100 Noms, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/en\/articles\/passion-histoire-blog-le-festival-du-voyageur\">Festival du Voyageur<\/a>, and the Saint-Boniface University.\u00a0 Francophonie is alive in Manitoba, its cultural existence is proof.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/ViBDgaooFXpvQEl6EFTSi8lJWjvfPeHaIVz0Jlv8N9IQ-IME9ojB7lII9Wi9RyMu0Mn1TnWERFSEcK4hRez8ciT2OiBM2QJJWpXt_YWs0Ly_cA1d7pazfmYvKuHi1SIyuDvJrJeD\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/GGferOnuNv8mX74pCNmbAB4SALvAvLkKMCRFFZtMoM7uqOlfazZ5vj5eoHxC5lO7uFZKaVzx5nm2NhRy_cs7zhjre7YXknQ99LFCoulhr8lBvEBfyvWoOtBqrvVQ0Q3lTjqW31f1\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/voHyvb3uQrlB_DOAJCQ6xuMc5F9_XwYgetmoPqK-6rvV1j2bSP2lMxRHMOse_ROtRKbWPvq8FBtdkN9kPafDZySuE_J4RfMs4WcZLsFfEAOjm6GH4EQkX-no-OTY652dE-DUCy0_\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><i>At the Heart of Manitoba\u2019s Francophone Community\u00a0<\/i>is about 40 minutes long.\u00a0 It was created in 2018 in the context of a project positioning Francophone tourism with the goal of identifying the narrative that describes the Francophone community.\u00a0 It\u2019s a must-see, whether you\u2019ve been in Manitoba for a few days, a few months, or your whole life!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.passionethistoire.ca\/images\/xl\/files\/articles\/42\/Sans%20titre%20(19).jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><strong>You can watch\u00a0<\/strong><i><strong>At the Heart of Manitoba\u2019s Francophone Community\u00a0<\/strong><\/i><strong>for free, Monday to Friday at 9:00 am and 4:00 pm in French and at 12 noon in English, at the Tourism Riel office located at 219 Provencher Blvd., and viewing times are also offered on weekends.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the questions about Saint-Boniface and Manitoban francophonie that comes up often is \u201cwhy?\u201d\u00a0 Why do we speak French here?\u00a0 And the follow-up question &#8211;
