The genealogical services are de\ufb01nitely the most in demand. The SHSB is one of the only places in Manitoba where people can request such services, which have been offered for the past 13 years by certi\ufb01ed genealogist Janet LaFrance: \u201cWe receive many requests each month&#8230;around 100.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"description\" class=\"row block-sm\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-10 col-lg-10 col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-12 mx-auto\">\n<p>While there are four options available to the public, the most popular is the proof of M\u00e9tis ancestry. \u201cWe look at the maternal or paternal lineage over six to eight generations to con\ufb01rm the presence of an officially recognized M\u00e9tis ancestor.\u201d The other three options consist in \u201ctracing the family genealogy by going back 10, 12 or even 15 generations along maternal or paternal lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given the number of requests received each month, wait times vary: \u201cIt takes two and a half months for a M\u00e9tis ancestry search and four to \ufb01ve months to process family genealogy requests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SHSB\u2019s archival services, managed by archivist Julie Reid, are also kept very busy. Archival records can be consulted or donated.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Says Reid: \u201cOur community archives document things like family, business and religious life. We even have archival documents from architect \u00c9tienne Gaboury, who donated them personally.\u201d The archives continue to attract interest: \u201cIn 2018, we documented more than 900 requests to consult the archives, including 414 in person.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to these two services, a reference library is also available. The collection boasts some 11,000 titles, including documents from the Archdiocese of St. Boniface resource library (Biblioth\u00e8que nationale de l\u2019Archev\u00each\u00e9 de Saint-Boniface) and periodicals and newspapers such as Le Manitoba, Le M\u00e9tis and La Libert\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The historical society also offers a variety of services to the public.
