In my opinion, it\u2019s one of the coolest events of the year.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>However\u2026 you might be wondering, \u201cKenza, it\u2019s September! Why are you bringing this up now?\u201d And of course, the answer is that the pandemic has pushed back the event to September 11th-12th, 2021. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Concept of Doors Open\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doors Open Winnipeg began in 2004, after having launched successfully in Toronto the year before. The first year, the event took place entirely in downtown Winnipeg. The event has taken place every year since, evolving slightly with each year to incorporate tour guides, offer a digital event, add new buildings, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Cindy Tugwell, the executive director of Heritage Winnipeg, the point of Doors Open isn\u2019t just to invite the public to explore new places and show off the architecture. It\u2019s also important to incorporate art, culture, heritage, and the people who use these buildings, today and in the past.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to get Winnipeggers exploring their city and its origins. Some of the buildings open only once a year, specifically for Doors Open. Heritage Winnipeg is working in collaboration with heritage conservation organizations from different regions in order to create strong connections and better serve the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doors Open in Saint-Boniface and the Riel Region<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year between Saint-Boniface, St. Vital, and St. Norbert, there are four different buildings to explore with the opportunity of a guided tour at each one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/doorsopenwinnipeg.ca\/building\/old-saint-boniface-city-hall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old Saint-Boniface City Hall, 219 Provencher<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I talked in depth about the Old City Hall and its history in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/passion-histoire-blog-historic-buildings-in-saint-boniface\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historic Buildings in Saint-Boniface <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with the building being partially open throughout the year, the Doors Open tour will disclose the controversy of its architecture and construction and reveal its secrets (the rumours are true\u2026 there was a prison in the basement!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3263\" src=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/219-provencher3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/219-provencher3.jpeg 1100w, https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/219-provencher3-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/219-provencher3-768x1024.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Heart of Manitoba\u2019s Francophone Community<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documentary is available to view at the Old City Hall for those looking to learn more about the community. Trust me, I saw it last year (I talk about the experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/passion-histoire-blog-at-the-heart-of-manitobas-francophone-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and it really is a must-see. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3269\" src=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/doc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"993\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/doc.jpg 512w, https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/doc-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 993px) 100vw, 993px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/doorsopenwinnipeg.ca\/building\/la-maison-gabrielle-roy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabrielle-Roy House, 375 rue Deschambault\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/passion-histoire-blog-my-visit-with-gabrielle-roy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabrielle Roy House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a central element of Francophone Manitoba, since this is the house where the renowned Franco-Canadian author grew up. She often mentions her home in her writing, but the house goes further than to just talk about her books. It also brings to life a house in the 1910s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3271\" src=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/maison-gab.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"969\" height=\"727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/maison-gab.jpg 512w, https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/maison-gab-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 969px) 100vw, 969px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/doorsopenwinnipeg.ca\/building\/st-vital-museum-former-fire-hall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Vital Museum, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600 St Mary&#8217;s Rd<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The St. Vital Museum is full of curiosities, like CDs, a 1939 fire truck, an exposition about the M\u00e9tis people that settled in St. Vital in 1820\u2026 and so much more!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/doorsopenwinnipeg.ca\/building\/eglise-saint-norbert\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Parish of Saint-Norbert, 70 rue Saint-Pierre<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint-Norbert is a quaint corner of the city thanks to its open-air <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/passion-histoire-blog-not-far-south-of-saint-boniface-discover-the-markets-in-saint-norbert\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">market <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and rich Francophone history. The church played an important role in the development of the community, as it was the parish of both Louis Riel and Father Ritchot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3265\" src=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/eglise-st-norbert.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/eglise-st-norbert.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/eglise-st-norbert-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/passionethistoire.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/eglise-st-norbert-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Information\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To visit a building or take a tour during Doors Open 2021, you need to reserve a time slot ahead of time for the site you wish to explore. Some buildings are open both Saturday and Sunday, while others are only open one day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In regards to health measures, masks are mandatory inside, as well as proof of vaccination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During your exploration, you can even take on a scavenger hunt and social media picture contest! A small Golden Boy is hidden in each building, all you have to do is find it and take a picture.
