In front of the Mint
There are places we think we know because they’re part of Winnipeg’s landscape, but we only truly discover them when we take the time to visit them. That’s exactly what we experienced during our recent visit to the Royal Canadian Mint.
As part of our collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mint for our marketing program, we had the privilege of visiting this iconic Saint-Boniface attraction. I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with my colleagues Caitlin, who handles reservations, and Louise, who manages multimedia. For my part, I’m responsible for tourism development and partnerships at Tourisme Riel.
As a destination management organization (DMO) serving the Riel District, we’re proud to count the Royal Canadian Mint among our community’s treasures. It’s a place that speaks for itself, impresses at first glance, and showcases Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, and Canada far beyond our borders.
From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the building’s architecture. Modern, imposing, and perfectly integrated into its surroundings, it reflects the importance of this national institution. Designed by Franco-Manitoban architect Étienne Gaboury, this building has become a true landmark in our landscape. Did you know that the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg is the only coin production facility located in Western Canada? It is also the country’s second mint, after the one in Ottawa, and produces not only Canadian circulation coins but also those of many countries around the world. A true symbol of Canadian craftsmanship.
Our tour was truly exceptional thanks to our guide, whose passion was contagious. Through his captivating explanations, we learned about every stage of coin production, from the raw material to the final product. Behind every coin lies remarkable precision, cutting-edge technology, and the expertise of teams of employees who perform essential work, often behind the scenes.
This tour completely changed the way we view the coins we use every day. We realized that they aren’t just objects that pass from hand to hand: they are the result of a long process, meticulous work, and a commitment to excellence.
We also discovered an impressive collection of commemorative and collectible coins. Each one tells a story, celebrates a significant moment, or pays tribute to a culture or event that has shaped this country. It’s a true blend of history, art, and innovation.
One moment in particular moved me deeply. At the entrance to the Mint, the flags of the countries that trust in Canadian expertise to produce their circulation coins are on display. What a joy it was to see my country’s flag there! It was a touching reminder that the Royal Canadian Mint forges ties with the entire world, while remaining firmly rooted here in Saint-Boniface.

Flags’ alley
And how can we talk about this visit without mentioning the gift shop? It’s brimming with collectibles, original gifts, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Whether you’re a collector, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique gift, it’s hard to leave empty-handed.
At Tourisme Riel, we firmly believe that the most wonderful discoveries are often right in our own backyard. The Royal Canadian Mint is one of those unique places that enrich our destination. It embodies a heritage, expertise, and collective pride for which we are deeply grateful.
If you’re looking for a unique, enriching activity that the whole family can enjoy, be sure to include the Royal Canadian Mint on your next outing. Once you step through its doors, you’ll learn a great deal, be impressed by the craftsmanship on display there every day, and—just like us—leave with a whole new perspective on those small coins that pass through our hands every day.
Be sure to check the Royal Canadian Mint’s website for upcoming tours, activities, and events, and follow Tourisme Riel on social media so you don’t miss out on anything this extraordinary place has to offer.
Because right in the heart of Saint-Boniface lies a true gem… and it’s worth discovering.
